Unleashing the Power of Research: MNH's Mission to Transform Healthcare in Tanzania
In a bold move, Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) is taking a giant leap forward in its quest to revolutionize specialized healthcare in Tanzania. But here's where it gets controversial: they're doing it through an intensified drive for research funding.
On December 12, 2025, during the launch of a groundbreaking research journal, MNH's Executive Director, Dr. Delilah Kimambo, unveiled the hospital's ambitious plan to enhance scientific studies and fuel improvements in specialized healthcare services across the nation.
"We're committed to evidence-based medical practice," Dr. Kimambo asserted. "Our long-term vision is to ensure research findings directly influence national health policies, enhance clinical training, and drive innovations in medical technology tailored to Tanzania's unique needs."
To achieve this, MNH is broadening its research horizons, aiming to attract funding that identifies public health needs, improves service delivery, and establishes cutting-edge medical services. But here's the part most people miss: research isn't just about improving clinical practice; it's about empowering policymakers with reliable data to shape the future of healthcare and upskilling health professionals.
Dr. Kimambo highlighted how internal studies have led to significant advancements in critical care, oncology, cardiology, maternal and child health, and specialized surgical services. Institutions like the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI), Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI), and Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) were born out of research that identified critical gaps in Tanzania's specialized healthcare landscape.
"Innovations like day-care chemotherapy, modern diagnostic tools, and minimally invasive surgical procedures were adopted based on evidence of their effectiveness and cost-efficiency," she explained. "Our studies have allowed us to expand interventional procedures, reducing hospital stays and improving patient recovery."
MNH's impact extends beyond clinical practice. Research conducted at the hospital has shaped national health policies, showing that many cases previously referred to MNH could be managed at lower-level health facilities. This prompted increased government investment in regional and district hospitals, allowing MNH to focus on specialized and superspecialized care.
Looking ahead, MNH plans to continue building local and global partnerships to strengthen expertise, attract more funding, and advance clinical trials addressing Africa's unique health challenges. MNH Public Health Specialist, Mr. Anord Nyanana, whose research focused on cooking-related burn injuries and the safe use of liquefied petroleum gas in Dar es Salaam, emphasized the transformative power of research in the health system.
"After noticing a rise in burn injuries linked to cooking gas, I conducted a study to contribute to better service delivery, enhance professional skills, strengthen national policies, and expand modern healthcare services to reach more people," he said.
