Belgium's Rail Revolution: ETCS Level 2 Rollout Complete with Siemens (2026)

Siemens, Equans, and Infrabel have successfully completed Belgium's ETCS Level 2 rollout, marking a significant milestone in the nation's rail modernization efforts. This achievement brings the Belgian railways to the forefront of European standards in efficiency and interoperability, transforming the country's transportation infrastructure.

The project aimed to modernize the entire Belgian rail network, which previously relied on outdated systems, hindering reliability, efficiency, and cross-border compatibility. Belgium's 'ETCS Masterplan' was driven by the need to comply with European regulations for enhanced safety and interoperability. The country's proactive approach resulted in a completion date of December 2025, surpassing the EU's deadline.

Dr. Jasmin Bigdon, Chief Technical Officer at Deutsche Bahn AG, emphasized the project's impact on remote control and automation of shunting movements. Deutsche Bahn's goal is to develop a pragmatic solution for remote-controlled train operations, addressing specific technological gaps and adjusting roles, processes, and regulations. The focus is on integrating technical solutions with real-world applications, with DB Fernverkehr AG contributing operational requirements and DB RegioNetz Infrastruktur GmbH providing infrastructure testing grounds.

The ETCS deployment follows a strategic line-by-line approach, prioritizing key routes and international connections. Siemens' Trainguard 200 RBC (ETCS L2) and Simis W (Interlocking) technology optimize train movements via GSM-R communication, enhancing network utilization, capacity, and efficiency. This comprehensive coverage includes major Belgian cities like Bruges, Ghent, Hasselt, Arlon, Verviers, and Mons, connecting the country's rail network from north to south and east to west.

The project seamlessly integrates 46 interlockings, 37 Radio Block Centers (RBCs), over 19,000 balises, and approximately 4,536 signals, ensuring advanced network performance. With a focus on critical European transport corridors and national railway axes, Belgium's commitment to an efficient, interconnected rail infrastructure is evident. The successful completion of ETCS deployment across the entire rail network, including both Level 1 and Level 2 coverage, solidifies Belgium's position as a leader in rail modernization.
